About a week ago a group of adventurers escaped a city that was put under quarantine in a city in on the continent of Westlind. They paid for passage out on a little old sailing ship called the Sundew.
The Sundew lacking a proper navigator and instead only home to a sickly halfling cartographer lost its way in the night of the escape. It proceeded to get more lost throughout the week.
The group had to share a room for that week but they haven’t really had a chance to get to know each other because the captain and crew have their passengers busy working
The group all agree to figure out where they are and find out where they are going because they are fed up with the lack of answers the crew are giving them. From outside their room they heard an argument. The look out to investigate interrupted a fight between the quartermaster and his men over food stores. The quartermaster is a a gruff half orc who directs them to the halfling in charge of navigating. They soon discover that the ‘navigator’ hasn’t been directing the ship at all and is sick in his private quarters.
He says he comes up from time to time but without knowing the ships speed and constant direction of travel he admits he’s completely lost
The group asks where they might find a looking glass and they are directed to the crows nest on the ships deck. They pass by the groups of people gambling over food and fresh water. They call up to a whispy human who’s up in the crowsnest. they shout up to him and inform him that their current navigator is ‘fired’ and that he should take over. There is some flustered nerves that happen when they realize that the tall man is actually the captain of the ship.
The captain explains that they must be near land because his pet Osprey came back with a reef or shallows fish in its claws recently and that if they continue in this direction they had to find land and that while this isn’t really a shipping route ships do, from time to time, come from the east.
He assures them that he will do his best to have them home safe. He also knows about some unrest with the crew. he suggests to the players that they should ‘deal with it’ for him.
The bard of the group charms the captain into giving her some salted fish and he gives her a sleeping potion to drug the troublesome sailors.
they bring the sleeping potion to the quartermaster who is fighting again
he puts the potion into some liquor and gives it to the troublesome men. the troublesome men decide to throw a party and begin passing out the entire barrel of drugged wine to the rest of the crew below deck.
Not long after this the warnings of an approaching storm begin. Aware of his lack of crewmen the captain instructs the players on how to do basic tasks. When the storm starts its very rough. Waves crash onto the deck and with one of them an octopus the size of a horse washes onto the ship. The octopus panics and begins to fling the crew around trying to get back to the sea. The group debates what to do before our monk, Zil, punches the soft ocean creature to death.
The entire ship gives a lurch like something from below was bumping up beneath it. The captain who is at the helm gives a cry of surprise as his control of the rudder is suddenly ripped from him. Something has knocked it clean off. Another wave crashes over the ship and sweeps Firos into the railing. He nearly falls into the sea. While hanging over the edge he can see the plate-like back of a giant sea ‘something’ skimming through the water and away from the ship. Wilfrid hurries over to him and lifts him up to safety.
When the tortoise backed monster disappears the storm fades as well.
They manage to convince the captain to inspect the damage to the ship. They drop him down with a rope He comes back up claiming that it looks like the back of the ship had been bitten by something very large.
A groggy sailor comes up from below and asks if there is a wizard around. They are convinced that the wizard is capable of fixing the ship or setting up a barrier to stop the small leak that had sprung in the hull. Firos looks around knowing he doesn’t have any spells for something like that. Instead he roots around in the room and finds some tar, a wooden dowel and some fabric to stopper it up he then makes some men hold it there for him.
He goes back on deck and sends out his owl familiar to seek out land.
Adrift with only their sails to steer them they run aground near a misty little island.
They steal one of the life boats and row to the little island. They find little stone pillars made of a obsidian like stone. They recognize these as old burial markers. beyond the little island is a far larger mountainous one in the mists.
They send a message back to the captain and tell him about this island. They inform him that they will go and scout it out. It was at this point that Lah realized that she could use a spell and make her unseen servant do the rowing work for them. It is nighttime but they are still able to see because they all have dark vision. They decide to look for fresh water and signs of civilization in the wood. the wood is thick and the ground is steep as they travel further east on the island. they don’t encounter any wildlife but they can see glints of silk hanging from the trees above them
Eventually they notice that the trees once they have thinned out , are numbered in elvish. They also note that the larger ones are planted in a staggered zigzag formation.
they decide to head towards the smaller numbers. Firos sends out his familiar to find water. Eventually the bird comes back and tells him in a sassy way to head a little farther north. After a short walk they encounter a sweet tasting creek that bubbled up from the forest floor.
the meditate and rest for a while to recover from their long day. When they are done meditating they notice that there is a well worn trail on the other side of the river. One side goes back to shore and the other side. “must go somewhere” they conclude so they follow the path further northwest.
Here they find a vine covered/ imposing temple made of the same black stone very little windows the windows that are there are narrow and made of a semi opaque white glass. from behind the glass is a red hot glow.
They knock on the door and are met with a strange blue skinned elf with red robes on.
he tells them that this is a temple , that no they do not have any food as eating here is forbidden, and they act very surprised and uncomfortable with these outsiders
They are confused with why they were asking about who they were praying to.
He did finally explain that of course they were praying to the life giving volcano.
after some deliberation he agrees to tell them where they can go to find “THE CITY” the only city the best city on the island.
He tells them to go back the way they came, gives them a stash of food that is hidden for emergencies and informs them that taking the shortcut is a bad idea and that they should take the shoreline route
Okay so they go back to shore, and meet up with the sailors from The Sundew. The quartermaster gives them money for supplies and lets them ‘borrow’ a row boat again.
they see some sights and wave at some stilt fishermen. They get to see the city. which envelops the entire shallows of a bay caused by a collapsed caldera.
They meet some sailors and ask if they are leaving any time soon and if its possible to get passage.
the sailors tell them that they aren’t comfortable with leaving port right now because foreign ships have been sinking or having troubles at sea lately. They witness a ceremony held by some of the temple’s clerics where they throw silver coins into the water for good fortune on their voyage. Lah uses her unseen servant to steal one of them.
Then they go deeper into the city to explore and get more information but before that they all bought new fancy ass elf clothes in the artisan district.
they all split up
Firos goes to the mages guild and learns a new spell from a fellow scholar, The monk diplomat goes to the academy to exchange news with someone who might know a bit more about the situation on the island. and the Bard explores the artisan district looking at instruments and getting free wine and gossip from a local inn.
Zil learns more about the city’s government, how they are set up and who may or may not be the source of any trouble on the island. The academic points fingers at both the noble district and the temple
Lah learns that some sailors with darker shadows were seen around the city and there has been an odd business with a new company of traders and mercenaries that don’t seem to be getting harassed by the ‘water spirits’
They all meet up again and they decide to go to an clean and reputable inn for foreigners in the trade district. Lah plays her instruments and learns a bit more about the ones made on the island. They also learn more about the shadows and an incident where men with darker shadows were seen chanting something strangely while out at sea.
Eventually they all settle down for the night. The half elves go to sleep and Firos practices his new spell on a plant after his meditation.
the group is attacked by a single shadow-like creature that seems attracted to . When the fight is over they head out of their room to discover even more shadows in the lobby. the fight is troublesome and the monk cant seem to land a single blow.
The fight is brutal and the shadows knock Zil out. Firos puts some of the shadows to sleep and stabilizes their companion and Lah opens up the windows of the in to let the sunrise inside. Lah shouts mockeries at the shadows and makes them disappear some of them fading away from the sheer shame of having a fat ass.
when its all over they take their friend to the temple district for healing and inform the guard about the bodies in the inn on the way. One of the guards helps carry Zil the rest of the way to the temple.
